We’re still in the midst of summertime and many of you are traveling for vacation or have a more demanding work travel schedule. We hear many of you talk about how difficult it is to maintain a workout routine when you’re out of your normal exercise element. You get into your destination, settle into your room and you’re exhausted or jet lagged. We get it. Traveling is hard on our bodies. However, you’d be amazed at how fast those traveling blues can fade with some exertion.
As we all know, exercise releases endorphins into our systems. These endorphins will offer relief from the usual traveling woes. One of the best things to do when you get to your new location? Rather than planting your bum on the bed with your laptop, go for a walk/run around your hotel to check out the sites near you. This is especially useful when you’re in a new city or area to get your bearings and scope out some potential spots to hit later. It’s a good idea to check with the front desk and your smart phone’s map feature to hit the best (and possibly safest) routes. If you’re staying in a place you frequent try navigating different routes than what you already know. You just may find a new park or coffee bar you have to try later!
Another easy (yes, easy) way to keep up all your hard work is to do basic resistance training in your room. This includes push-ups either on your toes or knees, whichever is more comfortable, tricep dips off a chair or a low table. Make sure anything you use is stable enough to handle your weight! Follow these with a couple rounds of squats. You can do regular squats in sets to exhaustion or you can change it up with single leg squats using a chair or get crazy and do jump squats to get that blood really pumping. Jumping exercises are a great way to get that cardio in when you don’t want to leave your room. We’re not suggesting you jump on the bed but we’re not telling you not to! Just kidding. Don’t do that.
Finish it off with a few rounds of various timed planks and you can check your workout off your list. You’ll be glad you did and you’ll be amazed at how much better you are going to feel on your vacation or work trip. Don’t believe us? Try it! We’d love to hear your success stories or your challenges. We can show you some of these exercises to put in your travel routine and demonstrate how to improvise in tight spaces. We are here to help you in your fitness goals and you are doing great with us in the gym. Let us help you when you can’t come see us! We’ll see you at the gym!
